Double Crochet Spike Stitch (dc spike)

This is the heart of the Millstone Stitch texture.

To make a dc spike stitch:
Yarn over, insert your hook into the stitch three rows below, yarn over and pull up a tall loop, yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over, and pull through the last two loops on your hook.

With Yarn A, ch 172, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc across each chain to the end. (171 sts)
Switch to Yarn B, ch 1, turn.

Row 1 – (Yarn B)

sc in first st, sc in next st,
hdc in next st, dc in next 5 sts, hdc in next st, sc in next st, ch 1, sk 1 st, sc in next st
rep from * to * until 9 sts remain,
hdc in next st, dc in next 5 sts, hdc in next st, sc in last 2 sts, ch 1, turn.

Row 2 – (Yarn B)

Repeat Row 1, skipping the ch-1 spaces from the previous row.
Switch to Yarn A, ch 1, turn.

Row 3 – (Yarn A)

sc in first st, sc in next 9 sts,
dc spike stitch in sc three rows below,
sc in next 9 sts, dc spike st in sc three rows below
rep from * to * until one st remains,
sc in last st, ch 1, turn.

Row 4 – (Yarn A)

sc in each st across to the end.
Switch to Yarn B, ch 3, turn.

Row 5 – (Yarn B)

dc in second st (ch 3 counts as first dc), dc in next st,
hdc in next st, sc in next st, ch 1, sk 1 st,
sc in next st, hdc in next st, dc in next 5 sts, hdc in next st, sc in next st, ch 1, sk st
rep until 5 sts remain,
sc in next st, hdc in next st, dc in next 3 sts, ch 3, turn.

Row 6 – (Yarn B)

Repeat Row 5, skipping the ch-1 spaces from previous row. Last dc goes into top of ch-3 from previous row.
Switch to Yarn A, ch 1, turn.

Row 7 – (Yarn A)

sc in first st, sc in next 4 sts, dc spike stitch in sc three rows below,
sc in next 9 sts, dc spike stitch in sc three rows below
rep from * to * until 5 sts remain,
sc in last 5 sts (last sc goes into turning ch), ch 1, turn.

Row 8 – (Yarn A)

sc in each st across to end.

Continuing the Pattern

Repeat Rows 1 through 8 for the desired length of your project. End with a Yarn A row.
Do not fasten off – we’re moving on to the border!

🎀 Border Instructions

Switch to a 5 mm hook for a smooth and flexible edge.

  1. Ch 1, sc in each gap along the edge, making sure to cover yarn carry-ups (this is shown in the accompanying video).

  2. Place a stitch marker in the first sc.

  3. 2 sc in last gap, 2 sc in first stitch along foundation row.

  4. Sc in each ch along the foundation row.

  5. 2 sc in last ch, 2 sc in first gap on opposite side.

  6. Sc in each gap along the edge.

  7. 2 sc in last gap, 2 sc in first st on the final edge.

  8. Sc in each stitch across to the marked sc.

  9. Sc in same stitch as first sc, sl st to first sc, fasten off, and weave in all ends.
