Working on Appliqués:
Utilize pre-cut paper shapes by copying individual pattern shapes onto thick, coated paper. Cut these shapes out. Using a paper pattern, cut fabric shapes about ¼ inch (6 mm) larger than the paper shapes (Refer to Figure C). Snip notches on the fabric edges. Apply a small amount of glue along the paper edge and fold the fabric seam allowance over the paper shape (Refer to Figure D). Repeat this process for all shapes.

Applying Appliqués:
Position the appliqués on the background fabric as indicated in Figure E, using the paper design beneath for proper placement. Use a bit of glue, pins, or basting stitches to secure the shapes in place. After positioning, sew the appliqués to the fabric with tiny stitches around the edges, matching the thread color to the fabric. Carefully remove the paper shapes after sewing. Cut through the fabric only behind each appliqué from the back of the background fabric and coax out the paper. Press the work. Smooth out any uneven edges on the back by fixing them to the middle of the appliqué with a small amount of glue if necessary.

Quilting and Trimming:
Create a quilt sandwich comprising the patchwork, wadding (batting), and lining fabric. Quilt as desired. Trim the work down to a size of 20 inches (51 cm) square.
Assembling the Cushion:
Assemble the cushion with an overlapped back using the two pieces of Fabric 1 and follow the instructions in the General Techniques: Cushion Cover. If desired, use buttons to secure the back.
Cushion Cover Assembly
The preferred method for a cushion cover often involves a seamless, overlap closure at the back (See Figure 1, 2).

Calculating Backing Piece Size:
Begin by determining the size of the two backing pieces required. Follow this process:
Measure the width of the cushion or pillow.
Divide this measurement in half and add 4 inches (10 cm). For instance, if the pillow is 20 inches (50 cm) wide: 20 inches ÷ 2 = 10 inches (25 cm) + 4 inches (10 cm) = 14 inches (35 cm). The height of these pieces should match that of the cushion front.
Create a hem along the short sides of both fabric pieces by folding the edge over by ½ inch (1.3 cm) twice. Stitch using matching thread and press.
Assembly:
Place the patchwork front with the right side up. Layer one backing piece on top with the right side facing down, ensuring the hem is towards the center. Follow by placing the second backing piece on top, also right side down, hem towards the center. Align the outer edges of all three pieces.
Seam and Turn:
To assemble the cover without a binding, stitch the layers together around the exterior, using a ¼ to ½ inch (6 mm–10 mm) seam. Remove pins and press. Turn the cover right side out and press again.
Binding Option:
If a binding is preferred, pin or tack the layers together with right sides facing out. Bind the cover as usual. Sewing the binding in place will securely attach the layers together.
Button-Fastening Cushion Cover:
For a decorative and functional addition, consider adding buttons to the back of the cushion cover. Follow the steps mentioned above, allowing for a wider hem where the backing pieces meet at the center. Use a sewing machine to create buttonholes along one hem and attach buttons on the other hem to correspond with the buttonholes.
Following these steps will guide you in creating a beautifully crafted Lemontree Appliqué Cushion, adding a touch of handmade charm to your home décor.
