Round 1: Begin by making a chain of three (this counts as a double crochet). Work eleven double crochets into the ring. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the initial chain-three. Fasten off. (You should have a total of twelve double crochets in this round).
Round 1
Round 2: Switch to white yarn. Join with a slip stitch in any space. Begin with a back post double crochet in the same space, then chain two. Make a regular double crochet in the same space, followed by another chain of two. Continue this pattern – one regular double crochet, chain two – in each space around. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the first back post double crochet. Fasten off.
Round 2
Round 3: Now, using your chosen color yarn, join with a slip stitch in any space and chain three (which counts as a double crochet). Add two more double crochets in the same space. In the next space, work three double crochets. Now, for the corners: Work three treble crochets, chain two, and three more treble crochets in the next space (this forms a corner). Then, work three double crochets in the next space, twice. Repeat this pattern from to a total of three times. After the final corner, work three treble crochets, chain two, and three more treble crochets in the next space. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the initial chain-three. Fasten off and neatly weave in any loose ends.
